A solid opening repertoire gives you a plan for the first ten moves of every game. Here are four foundational openings every player should know.

Italian Game

Fast development, aims at f7.

Sicilian Defense

Black's sharpest reply to 1.e4, fights for the center asymmetrically.

Queen's Gambit

1. d4 d5 2. c4

Offers a pawn to gain central control and open lines.

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5

One of the oldest, most respected openings in chess.
